ATTACHMENTS:

  • The gluteus maximus attaches from the posterior iliac crest, posterolateral sacrum, and coccyx to the gluteal tuberosity and ITB.

 

ACTIONS:

  • The gluteus maximus extends, laterally rotates, abducts (upper 1/3 fibers), and adducts (lower 2/3 fibers) the thigh at the hip joint.
  • It also posteriorly tilts, depresses (upper fibers) or elevates (lower fibers), and contralaterally rotates the pelvis at the hip joint.

 

TRIVIA NOTE:

  • The gluteus maximus is the largest muscle in the human body.
